Your Xperia Questions Answered

This blog is coming up to being two weeks old and we’ve received a fair few questions in the comments sections. Yesterday I went through the questions with Ramanath and we sorted out answers to those which are most commonly asked. So here goes:

• Launch dates / networks etc… It’s really not up to us to say which networks will be carrying the phone and when. They all have their own business plans and their own plans for the launch etc…. so we’re not going to get involved in speculation as to who will carry it and when. The launch date of the 30th is the day we ship the phones to the networks and there will, most likely be some lead time before it appears. (though I’d expect to see it on some shelves in early October.)

• Is there an accelerometer? No.

• Will there be 30 fps video recording? Yes ,as promised.

• Will there be one or two versions of the phone? There will be two versions, one for the US and one for everyone else.

• Is there any difference between the black and silver versions of the phone? Yes, one is black, the other is silver. Other than that, no they are the same phone.

• How big is the battery and how long does it last? The battery is a 1500mAh unit (about 10% bigger than, for example, the touch pro). How long it lasts depends very much on how much you use the phone. Even in the worst case scenario, with all the features turned on (GPS, internet, applications etc…) and heavy usage, it will last all day and need to be charged over night.

• Questions re: the speed etc… The device has a graphics accelerator, a 528 Mhz processor and 384 megs of ram (so it should be as fast as anything else that is out there.)

That’s it for the moment, keep the questions coming and we’ll keep trying to answer them. We should also take this opportunity to thank all of you who have been involved so far. Since we launched on the 15th we’ve had more than 9,000 unique visitors and 28,000 page views (which is more than we hoped for). The opportunity to engage in a conversation with all of you is hugely important to us and we genuinely appreciate your involvement in the site.

Thanks again,

Sam Oakley and Ramanath Bhat

Thanks for the update, checking every day to little news was getting a bit frustrating!

As far as new requests; some new video of the video recording features, of someone using the keyboard (any sticky keys etc?), and while in Opera flipping screen orientation would be great! Did there end up a separate button for changing screen orientation of do we have to map a key?

Thanks again!

Thanks for that clarification Sam and Ramanath.

It is greatly appreciated.

However, to address the two versions of the phone,

In what ways is the US version different from the other one?

i.e. in speculation it has been said that the US one has 24fps video recording instead of 30fps and plays in QVGA 320×240 and not VGA 640×480.

Thanks again.

Really great to see that you are answering people’s questions first of all. I can only hope that this continues after the launch of the phone and obviously for the length of time that the phone is being sold.

Anyway, with respect to the lack of an accelerometer, I do hope it is convenient to assign a button to switch the orientation of the screen, without having to sacrifice usability in some other program or interface. Because I have no idea really how many buttons are on the phone in total except for the ones on the front. If you are using those to scroll web pages and return to the home screen for example, I would be curious to see if other buttons can be allocated to that specific function of screen rotation.

I had an ipaq 4700 and even thinking back, I have no idea what I would use an accelerometer for but it would have been nice of course to have the option of turning it on or off.

It is also unfortunate that there are two versions of the phone. So I can only hope that the specs are extremely similar except for a difference in frequencies maybe. Having said that however and not knowing much about cellphone frequencies and their inner workings, I do find it strange that you could not have put all the required frequencies in one phone and simply have one model. But as I said, I don’t know enough about the technology from such a perspective.

Finally, it is unfortunate that you have no idea which networks would launch it. True I cannot blame Sony for this at all but I was at Verizon in the U.S. and was asking them “about a non Sony phone” which has been on the Internet for 3 or 4 months now. The manufacturer said they will be releasing the phone with Verizon around the end of October and even after going into the Verizon store and asking about the phone, the employees and store manager had no idea what I was talking about. So it is really frustrating at times when people who work in the industry, do not seem to keep up with what is going on or don’t really care.

To the editors: If I cannot put Verizon in the post, please remove it and simply put “a US cell provider” or something like that.

How quick is the response time of the screen while in camera or video mode?

For example, a digital camera will show a realistic image on the lcd as you move around, while many mobile devices will show a blurry or streaky image while panning around, especially in low light situations.

A video from the user’s perspective of the X1 taking pictures and video would be very much appreciated.

Will there be a one-stop shop for additional panels? It would be nice to not have to trawl the web for panels, and to be able to see a catalogue of them - not having to download them to the phone to see what they’re like would be good.

@Adam - Watch some of the videos they have both on Youtube and in the video section. Several of them clearly show that there is a Stylus and it is stored with in the side of the phone. There is a hole at the top adjacent to the Power button where you stick it in.

@Chris - Doubtful, there is a mini-usb connection. The only way I could see possibly doing this is connecting it to a computer via USB and playing content from the phone and then using TV out on the computer to a television etc.

@TheWhite Snowman - There hasn’t been any word on whether or not there will be a CDMA version. I would be inclined to say no there wont be. Being that this is a GSM phone you are looking at probably using it on whatever GSM network is available in Canada…As far as version I believe you will want to the US version, but I’m not really clear on networks Canada uses.

@Christon Burns - Radio requires headphones to be plugged in. MP3’s, Movies do not. Headphones act as an Antenna for the radio since there is no built in one.

@Carl - Yes, you will need to buy and unlocked version of the phone. T-mobile wont ever pick this phone up, but it does have the required frequency for the t-mobile network so unlocked version will be fine. Check websites online for it, you will probably be able to buy it on Amazon.com, Ebay obviously, and many many mobile retailers.. I use mobilecityonline.com 90% of the time for unlocked GSM phones.

@Andrew - All of the videos on youtube at this time of the phone feature pre-release demo units. Most, if not all are running a still buggy rom as well as the original 256MB of RAM. There is 1 video with a SE rep giving a demo and he is using what he says is the upgraded model with 384MB of ram, though still not a final release rom and you will see that the panel system is much much quicker than the rest of those videos. Also, keep in mind since its a WM6.1 phone there are definitely some memory management issues in that OS. A lot of them can be fixed with simple registry tweaks though. Check the XDA developers forum for more information on this.

ok thats enough for now. I am not affiliated with this site, all of these questions are either just a case of common sense knowing what you know about the phone and bits and piece from demos given of the phone by SE reps.

Thanks for the response, but as you can see, someone not affiliated with the site has stepped up and answered some of the questions. Maybe this is what you want, a support community of users just like xda, howard, or any other forum. But I think there is an incredible amount of interest and anticipation right now, it’s up to you what you do with it.

Leave people frustrated and ignored, to figure things out on their own, spending time sorting through all the information, disinformation, and redundant questions… or not having the time to do so and moving on, or for those that have the device, continuing to use it with an unsolved issue and not being truly happy with it…

Or you can take control. Give people what they want: Quick responses to their questions, a place to go and easily find a solution to their problem, where all the information an Xperia user could ever need is organized and kept up-to-date!

The X1 may not be much different than a Touch Pro. You have the user experience (panels) which may be a little better, but if you can use this site to make the ongoing chore of keeping a feature-packed Windows Mobile device such as this operating smoothly and effectively to its full potential, THEN you’ve really got something different than anything else out there.

To me, that might be the biggest incentive to owning this device.

Current score: 0

mlinz
Oct 3, 2008 21:04

@Sam - No it doesn’t. Its not a Dual-Sim device.

@Mike - Read through what I posted before about carriers. SE wont release information about potential carriers. It is up to the carriers themselves to tell consumers whether they are going to carrier a specific phone. As far as the US is concerned you’ve got 2 potential networks that can make use of the phone (T-mobile and At&T) I can say with almost 100% certainty that t-mobile will not pick up this phone given their recent launch of G1 Android phone. They don’t need competition for that as its a flagship phones in terms of OS and usage for them.

At&t is a wild card, but I would be inclined to say that they are pretty unlikely to pick up the X1 as well.

You will however have the ability to buy this phone unlocked from a mobile phone vendor and use it freely on their networks. However you will be paying full price as they are not a carrier and can not subsidize phone prices in lieu of a 2 year agreement. So, if you want this phone, buy it online, unlocked if you are in the USA.

Current score: 0

tommy
Oct 4, 2008 6:19

If you are concerned about the price, convert the pounds and you will have a ballpark figure to save for! So there is that solution, and I think if you read above you will see that it says that there is an unlocked version available, so if you want it that badly you can purchase the unlocked phone and the appropriate sim card for your carrier. Personally from my experience, you will probably find it cheaper buying an unlocked version than waiting for the US release, but that is just my opinion. Unless you are renewing your contract you are getting SCREWED if you purchase it straight up from a carrier.

I’ve been waiting for this phone for ages, but can’t get my head around the onboard memory. I couldn’t find specs on the onboard memory on the SE website so had to go to a third party site.
The info I have found is 400mb phone memory and 512mb on the memory card. The Samsung Omnia has 8 GIG, the iPhone has 8 GIG or 16 GIG, and the Nokia N96 has 16GIG. I had hoped the Xperia would be comparable.
Is the data I found incorrect or does the Xperia really only have less memory than my 19 month old SEW950 with it’s 2Gig memory card?? My 2gig card won’t even work in the phone so on top of £500+ I’d need to buy another memory card, just doesn’t make sense!

@mlinz - Re: ALS

Thanks for your reply - but I don’t think you understood my question. ALS/Line 2 isn’t a dual-sim issue. Line 2 is provided in the UK by Orange where you have 2 numbers/lines on one physical SIM. You can recieve calls on either line and switch between whichever line you want to make outgoing calls from via a menu/shortcut.

I’ve been told the X1 does support it (contrary to wiki article and other reports), but need to clarify it from a ‘live’ source…

Oct 6, 2008 15:48

@Marie - The phone has built in memory of up to 400MB depending on preloaded config (basically if its picked up by a carrier, what crap they want to put on it) There is a memory stick slot that offers memory expansion up, they say up to 16GB, but 32GB might be a viable option as well. It doesn’t come with that much onboard memory because there are a lot of other things in there, the battery is larger, keyboard and arc slider etc. Have to keep weight and size down…Other phones like the iphone for instance use a solid state disk for storage, there is no option to expand the memory with a memory stick..having that gives you some flexibility etc.

Why does the comparison page on the official Sony Ericsson site show so many blanks for the Xperia e.g. against available functions. It makes it look like it has less functionality than the P990i.
It’s obviously not been fully populated - how bad is that?

in answer to the questions posed asking for compatibility with bluetooth watches

there are two or three free applications on the market for the se bluetooth watch to allow this to work with wndows mobile phones running version 4,5 and 6 as with the x1
covering mbw-100 upwards there free so do a seach on smartwatchm and btwatch

these will offer more functionality than the current se phones do !

i’ve already downloaded both versions to try and all i need is the phone…..

Hello there,

I Was wondering, what are all these letters people keep saying, like WMA and whatever else?

Should I be aware of these letters,

I Am very interested in this phone and love it muchly!

I am not sure which colour to get, black or silver.

Anyway, the big question for me, If i am going to buy the phone on contract not PAYG which I am most definatly not seen as though it is £480… i am in the UK by the way!
So, if I buy the phone on contract and see that £45 a month is a lot. Is there anyway i can lower the price, by taking features away like, Gps for example?

Please Answer Back…

Regards,

Myles.

Had mine a few days now, on Vodafone uk, but major problem is it won’t work as a modem on my laptop, either on USB or Bluetooth. Sony say it’s a known problem that Vodafone need to rectify, and Vodafone say it’s because Sony haven’t issued a PC Suite, either way as a result the phone will be going back.

I am sorry to say that my new X1 was shipped with a defective installation CD, my computer (sorry to say it´s a Sony, nice design but way too expensive) keeps on saying it wants to send a message to Microsoft (as if it was any business of them!) to tell them all about it. First hour with the new gadget, first disappointment.
Second disappointment: The in-built camera. I did not know they still made cameras so slow.

Hope(if I should get an answer) its really true and official. All kinds of numbers are around about the capacity for microSD cards. Which one is true and (if its 16 gb) will an softwareupdate in future rise it up to 32 gb??
I know, this is not an Walkmanphone, but we are getting into the year 2009…
Thanks.

th bst way to tackle ths is to make manual changes in th battry section like “auto adjust backlight’, sleep and powersave mode…….hope ths helps!

Hi, is anyone aware that there may be a potential issue with the X1 case, ie cracking near the stylus hole? I’ve been monitoring forums, and there seems to be a common theme emerging where a number of X1 users have experience this problem.

I’m hoping that this is only a bad batch, as I’m really want to buy the X1.

Apparently, its occurring on the silver case, more than the black case. However I have read some posts indicating the problem occurred on some black cases as well. It also appears that some local Sony web sites have removed the silver color as a available option?

The incoming call notification was very small and push the botton to answer call was very low tech. This is one thing I didn’t like about the X1

Is there a dialer software/cab similar to HTC HD touch to use on Xperia?

And yeah umbrellafella, even if you connect it to the mac as a mass storage device all you can do is read and open files, but you cant write on the card. In other words you can view an image on the memory card and copy it, but you can’t add a new one or a song.
