Xperia X1 is officially launched

Tags: ,

image Today is the official launch date for the Xperia X1 and I just wanted to confirm to everyone that it has launched as planned. Units have left the factory and are on their way to the shops in the UK and Nordic markets where they should be available in the next week or so.

The new X1 product site is also live and has some consumer videos demonstrating some of the X1’s strengths, including a look at the panels and how you can personalise your X1. Other videos cover mobile internet, the wide VGA touch screen, the arc slider qwerty keyboard, camera and video recorder, MP3 player, Google Maps and assisted GPS. There’s even a video about how you can use the X1 to make and receive calls!

Okay, so today is the ‘offical launch’ date for the xperia X1. What does that actually mean to U.S. consumers interested in purchasing the phone. Questions such as when, where and for how much are yet to be answered.

Amazin that the x1 is now being shipped. But im really worried about whether it will actually be released in India in October cause carriers don’t usually release Mobiles. So can we see it in a sony world or do we have to wait till some carrier signs up.

yeah so what if its launched. been waiting so many months for this phone n it keeps getting delayed. now they say doesnt mean its launch it will b available and have to wait another week! gosh this stupid se ppl, hurry up n it doesnt matter how big company u r , but if u keep on pushing dateline n all, ppl will just opt for other better phones which r already available and comapnies which are much more punctual and trustworthy. n i dont care if it takes a week for shiping, when u launch a freaking phone, it means that it should b selling straight away n besides u had so much time to ship it by delaying n annoying ppl!

irriated, Nosscire, I feel you guys. This whole things is a big disspointment. After all the delays, the phone is finally ‘launched’ but not yet available. . . the hell does that mean? And if SE is talking about shipment dates, and the ‘launch date’ is upto the networks, then why can’t they disclose the shipment dates to the rest of the world? Afterall, they are only the ’shipment dates’. I think this is the least SE can do appease the irritated consumers.

I think SE has this all wrong. Despite all the hot new phones that have hit the market recently (or expected to hit the market), SE probably thinks that this phone will sell strong, thereby can blow off guys like us who have been waiting forever patiently for this phone to come out. Boy are they in for a surprise. Never underestimate the dissapointed buyers and the power of word of mouth. I will soon switch my phone to another brand, as I am tired of waiting, and will buy a different phone for my wife too, as she currently uses a SE.

Good luck, Sam (Oakley)

OK, what about markets that are not all operator-driven? Here in Poland we don’t buy phones exclusively from operators - it’s very easy to say that some entities called “networks” will decide and SE’s got nothing to do with availability, but there’s one thing missing here - when will the X1 be released to retailers?

I think that @irritated made a pretty valid and interesting point. The old way of doing things is to make an announcement, then a release and then it becomes available for sale at the stores.

In this day and age, release and sale should be very very close to each other, if not on the very same day itself.

Customers don’t care about logistics and delivery mechanisms and difficulties, they want the products in their hands and using it. So if you say it is released and they don’t see it anywhere, it isn’t released.

Same question as ‘nice to hear from you’, when will the flagship store have sim-free stocks?? … No midnight opening and queues forming outside the shop on ‘release night’ I take it. I am flying into the UK today (02/10/2008) and leaving on Sunday … I was hoping to pick one up - initially I was worried that first batches would all have been snapped up long before I arrived in the UK … but by the sounds of things the first batches will be in a logistics centre even long after I have left the UK. … So back to the question: Flagship store sim-free release date?? and any update on retail price for SimFree?

sam oakley,
common man enough is enough blaming other ppl n carriers n network. U had a delivery date to deliver n tell us the deliver or shipping date exactly. IF ur on time and didnt delay and (but u made us wait for ages ) released the phone few months back earlier, then its ok n we would understand bot shipping/network that ur trying to b true to ur companies reputation n respect ur users n not make them wait like dogs on the road.
already the delay for few months n so many other phones r out on the market, we really dont care bout logicstics n inventory or shipping complications, all we want is the phone when u say it is launch, period!
not delay n say oh its just the shipping date n give excuses. even other users agree like

Yes, this is all very frustrating by SE.

They should have just have said,

“Will be in shops for 10th October”

not “Will be released 30th September”

but then when you enquire to Vodafone/Phones4u/Anyone they all say the same thing, “We expect this to be on sale within the next couple of weeks”

WTF!?

Seriously what does launched mean here? If I launched something into space or anywhere for that matter you would be able to know where to and when it would arrive. I would really love to know the relative price range for this device so I know if it’s even worth waiting any longer for. So much hype and so much time passed, I’m afraid that I’ll find out it’s one big disappointment.

@Bloob - Technically to SE this is their “launch” it has nothing to do with it being available in retail stores yet. It all depends on when they want to put it on the shelf. Probably Monday morning if they have received their shipment from the SE factory. Everyone needs to calm down.

I really hope that after someone gets their grubby hands on a final version they release a very very detailed video so people will stop asking the same questions over and over again as well. If you want to find the information you can you might have to look in a few different places for it though. A big issue is a lot of the information is wrong, soon we’ll know everything.

I am however kind of upset there hasn’t been an announcement of the US release version.

For everyone asking about when it will be released in your country keep in mind 2 things…

1. This is a GSM phone.
2. There are 2 versions USA and EVERYONE ELSE - If your mobile service is on a GSM network, get your ass online and buy the phone when someone has it available in stock early next week. Stop asking questions like that. It isn’t as if people in India can’t order products from the UK…

The point I am making here is that SE needs to manage the perception of the release, and to make seem available, even when physically, it will take time for stocks to make it to the stores.

How can this be done?

If you look through the various forums and review sites, people are practically screaming for a review of actual production units, not prototype units that have been circulating around for some time already.

First, why didn’t SE reserve some units of production units to be pushed into the hands of press, reviewers and bloggers, so that important information can continue to stream out from the date of release?? This keeps interest high and gives confirmation that, yes, production units are indeed out in the wild.

Second, from where are the stocks being shipped out? The factories in Taiwan or other parts of the world, or in warehouse hubs near to the target markets? Using the latter would have cut down shipping times dramatically and into the stores within a few days. But it would mean also starting production slightly earlier and incurring additional storage and delivery costs.

Lastly, did SE coordinate with certain key networks and retailers to receive priority stocks so that availability information can be promised to customers. From what I have gleaned, it seems that both networks and retailers don’t have a clear idea when they will receive their stocks.

@Bill - This is still a very innovative product. Just because phones have recently been announced that are similar doesn’t means its not. It is still the first to the market. You wont see a final version of the Touch HD for probably a few more month. Also, that phone will never come to the USA either if thats and issue for you.

Just some quick points..

First to the market with a 800×480 resolution screen. First phone to offer full DVD quality playback, I know you want to think the iphone can do this, but it can’t. Panel system not only presents a easy to use and master UI system for the end user, but there is nothing like it other there. TouchFlo3d looks awesome, but there is almost no customization.
The Touch Pro is similar, but made entirely of plastic where the X1 is Metal. Screen size on the pro is 2.8″ and the resolution is almost half of what the X1 has so things wont look as good. Pro also doesn’t have onboard 3d acceleration either.

So having first heard of this phone way back in March or whatever, sure it SEEMS like there should be so much more to it now, but really its still an innovative product. At the very least the X1 should fuel the market and get manufactures on the ball in making great phones rather than the same thing all the time.

To be realistic for a second, I very much doubt SE’s intention was to delay the launch. Imagine how much ground they have lost “letting” Samsung, Nokia, HTC bring their all-singing-and-dancing ‘phones’ to the market first. It’s SE’s first mobile windows device, and I guess they need to get it right. I’d sooner have that than a half-baked product rushed to market.

The second issue is that there has always been the “released” thing. I have lost count (if I had been counting) of the number of products I’ve eagerly awaited, were declared as released, but took weeks before they arrived on the shelves. Modern technology, the internet, whatever doesn’t change that. Fact of life, I’m afraid.

Let’s not also forget that people like Vodafone like to bastardise the phones before they offer it to us with their logos, own software, and limited functionality. That takes time.

I personally do not see all the commotion, this is a cell phone that carriers have to pick up, contracts with companies and phones need signed. etc etc. I simply feel that many people on here are acting like this is a movie release and they are angry that there is not a copy in the stores yet. In a way, it is like you are all angry girls who cannot find your copy of Sex & the City. This is a little higher level than a movie, and you will just have to be patient, at least the phone is available to your carrier now, then is a lot more than you can say about before the 3oth. And at least you are not waiting for the phone to break, as many people outside these three areas still are.

Hate to say it but i am purchasing a HTC Touch Pro. My reasons are listed.

1. The time it has taken Sony to release this phone. In February this year SE stated that the phone would be out ’soon’. 8 months on and it is only just hitting the stores in the UK, Germany and the like. The phone wont hit the market until early next year (thats what SE say) in Asia / USA areas.

Score 2/10

2. Software. WM 6.1. Bad choice. Name one phone that this software has worked well on? Once again SE have blamed the software for the late release.

Score 3/10

3. Handling of issues. Time and time again we get the run around from SE about the phone and even when they release a press notice, very little if no communication at all is made on the internet.

Score 2/10

Sorry Sony. I used to be a great fan of yours and this phone would have really made me a life long user of SE products. Not any more.

Have to say, I’m getting a bit disillusioned by these all-singing-all-dancing phones - they all seem to turn out to be tone death and have two left feet. Many are experiencing problems with the N96 and many more with the Samsung Omnia. I would like to think the X1 will break mold and actually do what it says on the tin, but you just know (despite all that extra development time) it will fall over the first chance it gets. Not to mention all the rubbish the phone operator will stick on it - it beggars belief how manufacturers allow this to happen, as inevitably it is the manufacturer who will get blamed.

i heard from a mobile phone retailer… that SE experia x1 is slightly delayed (deliberately) since NOkia N96 was launched and is a much better phone then this one… so probably SE wants the initial hype around N96 to calm down and then hit the stores with x1…

Hi,

Clove has sent out e-mails that SE has delayed Xperia till the end of the month and thus it won’t be available now. Is this true? if so, then it really sucks!

The set was “officialy” launched on the 30th of last month. Over 10 days later, still no final Xperia device has been seen, and no store is yet offering it on sale - i.e. having it in stock.

Furthermore, there is not a single page that details the entire specifications of Xperia in detail. The whitepaper that was recently linked to on Xperiancers was also from back in May. Does Sony Ericsson even know how to market their phones and how to detail them? Because from where i’m sitting, Johnny X seems to be the only marketing campaign at the moment and it is completely useless.

Over a month back i was determined to purchase Touch Pro… then i switched to Xperia and decided to wait. But now i am getting really impatient with Sony Ericsson and lack of any final device reviews and availability and this after 2 weeks of the “supposed” launch of Xperia.

Is there any chance that Xperia will be actually launched/availble within this week or early next? Or is it actually delayed?

I have to say that i am extremely disappointed in Sony Ericsson at this point and have pretty much lost confident in it. Even the demonstration video by Xperiancers done a few days back is on a prototype/non-final device which is what the demonstrator continuously states at the start and end of the demonstration.. Maybe i should just go for some other smartphone?

Hopefully you’ll have enough decency to supply us with an insight on when actually will Xperia be available. I don’t care about where it will be available - may it be UK or on a remote island - but just tell us WHEN WILL XPERIA BE ACTUALLY AVAILABLE?!?!?!?!?

Best Regards.
Salman Khalid.

I, too am curious about the status of the X1.

Frankly I’m happy to wait for the X1, no other such device piques my interest currently and i doubt anything will for the foreseeable future; I’m quite aware that delays happen, even to the most meticulously planned of projects.

The only thing that i find frustrating is the complete lack of communication regarding these delays. The X1 is a hotly anticipated device and there are a great many people waiting for this phone to release, and undoubtedly many more waiting for confirmation of the phone’s performance before purchasing (I myself have a number of friends using me as a ‘guinea pig’ of sorts)

Sony Ericsson have obviously gone to the trouble of setting up this Blog to get information out to those who want it, but it’s all proving to be a bit redundant when they’re not using it to keep people informed… Other points of interest for the X1 all over the net are rife with people disappointed by the repeated delays and lack of information

Speaking for myself, I’m quite happy to continue waiting, I’d just be much happier if i knew how much longer i had to do so.

SE have a fantastic device on their hands, it’d be a shame to botch the launch with this kind of behaviour when all the ‘damage control’ that is needed is for one person with what i can only assume is common knowledge within SE themselves to reach out to the community and tell us what’s going on.

Cheers

D

Late August / early September many sites were reporting that the X1 would be delayed until December 2008 / January 2009. Considering the degree of consternation expressed on this blog, and no news coming in return from SE suggests to me that this is likely to be true. If it were currently shipping to retailers if would be very easy to dispel this “remur”. Far from review sites getting their hands on a production model, not even the ones at the launch were final production versions? Smells fishy to me.

This is really sad of SE, lesson from the past, should have taught them good planning, marketing and launches are essential in keeping their reputation and more importantly their customers.
Sony had previously missed out when launching the PS3, this again frustrated the customers, and I know that many of my friends ended up purchasing the competitors consol, again the most frustrating notion was not knowing the release date…. it kept changing, putting peoples hopes up and a major blow.
SE seem to be doing the same now, there are some good grand phone been released which, I think, I might go for.
SE appeared to have hyped the X1 since Feb, and given had release date and yet could not produce the goods. Frustrating …….. SE needs to learn to communicate faithfully with their customers.
I’ve been making enquires since mid Sep and yes I’ve had dates given to me that have produced nothing but another date,
I spoke to Vodafone they said 3rd oct, on the 3rd they said 10th of oct and on the 10th they said the 17th……. buckle UP SE your about to lose some loyal customers, your reputation and your market, talk to us, knowing is more acceptable, than not knowing.

These phones have been released and sold already most of them, I dont understand why some people are questioning release?

My best guess to delays would pretty much be that all products are always delayed, and given if we read articles that X1 was developed in cooperation with other companies then there is a high risk that time estimation for release get skewed.

Not to mention that this is actually a Microsoft related product. I am still waiting for any product of theirs to actually be released on time.

@ Daniel

Jeez…WM6.1 is a store bought product, this delay has NOTHING to do with Microsoft; it may have to do with changes they make the to base system but Microsoft sure is working on it…

X1 DOES NOT EXIST

that’s what I think.
Wow, everyone is still at it. . . which probably means that X1 is still not ‘launched’ yet. I gave up on SE weeks ago, and got myself a HTC Touch Pro in Singapore.
And it is AWSOME!! Of course, if given the option, I probably would have picked X1 over HTC Touch Pro, but what can I say? X1 is not out in the market yet. It will probably never hit the market. Looks like there are rumours that it won’t be out until later this year or early next year. . . SE, you guys are PATHETIC!!
To all the guys waiting : you guys have to MOVE ON! Stop chasing after something that will never hit the market.

Below is what Sam Oakley, X1’s account manager wrote to @ irritated on Oct/1:

//qte//
@ irritated: we shipped the phone on the day we said we were going to, when the networks decide to put it into their shops is completetly up to them and can’t and shouldn’t be influenced by us. Thanks for the comment though, criticism is as useful as praise.
//unqte//

Shipped on the day you promised, eh? Come on Sam, come clean here and now, and may be some of us may forgive you.

Still waiting for this phone to actually be released in UK. Was launched on Sept 30th? and Still no signs of the availibility? This is annoying really, People are waiting to get hold of the X1 but its getting delayed? I think SE tried doing something to compete with iPhone and fail with alot of problems after problems. Hence the delay in the “OFFCIAL” release.

So the question is: When is SE going to answer the questions that are asked? or Is SE waiting to release the phone in December so that they can make their profit through xmas sales?? If you ask me, Why wait for a buggy X1 when you can go out and get n96 or iPhone or any other good phones that are currently released. I’ve been a loyal customer with SE but their poor managment and lack of business approach appauls me. SE sorry to say but you failed big time and your reputation is not looking good.

SE UK don’t even have the thing (30 September!)!

Thing is once SE have finished designing & building their Time Machine they will be able to release the product on 30 September as promissed.

There does seem a lot of De Lorean sales just now.

What’s the point in having “Press Release, 30 September blah blah blah” then not having the decency to release another saying “sorry date changed, production problems, can’t find flux capacaitors, blah blah”

What’s the hold up with the X1 then?

I’ve been sitting patiently waiting for 3 weeks with my PAC code at the ready so I can move network. But i want an X1, which i assumed would be out long before now (probably something to do with it being “released” nearly a month ago)

If it’s not here by by the end of next week I’m going to have to bail and get a phone I don’t want because SE have screwed up big time with this phone.

Every shop I go into say they haven’t been given a date by SE, some stores haven’t even heard of the phone! I’m starting to think this has all been a hoax or something!

Oh, and if the phone was released as scheduled and the networks are waiting, then why is it still down as “pre-order now” on SE’s own shop????????

Beyond a joke now…….

Isn’t this SE’s link for comments? So why are they not listening? USA wants this phone but we are growing impatient, people. I love SE but I might have to cheat on them if they don’t have the x1 out by the end of Oct. I need a new phone and the iphone is looking better everyday the x1 is not out. So make it happen SE, we know you can. You are losing costomers by the minute. Don’t lose another one.

Hope you don’t disappointed us any longer.

o2 shop in London (Victoria Street) just have a dummy piece for display… they say …still awaiting stock…but can’t say when… but they could share some details on tariff..etc. it is free on £75 tariff and those on £45 will have to pay a one-time £50 to get the phone…

However, Carphonewarehouse website is listing it at £45 (free)…(as pointed above)…so dont know whats really going on….

Sony online store has it for £500 sim free… (pre-orders only)

While I agree that Sony has a hard time with public relations (a lot of it solved by getting Sir Stringer to speak more IMO), the Xperia is not the PS3. Sony simply followed Apple’s suit in previewing the phone well before release date. This was necessary to ensure investor confidence, when the iPhone is devastating the current competition. And the phone is not late to ship or delayed. Many SKUs have a manufacturer’s launch date vs. a retail launch date.

As an American, I’m pretty lucky to get a lot of cool gadgets ahead of Europe, so I don’t mind waiting my turn.

Seriously, I was SO looking forward to Nov 3. I have been putting off getting a new phone in anticipation of getting the X1. I desperately need a new phone, too. I am so torn right now because with my luck I’ll buy a different phone and *then* Sony will decide to get off their asses and release it in the US.

I am getting more and more irritated waiting for this phone to come out :(

Yeah, this whole play is getting so old. Announce a product a year before ship date, let a few interested prospects whip everyone into a frenzy, then let announced products languish with zero information.

At least Apple sticks to something of a schedule. Sony promises everything but a release date.

the guy who showed me the demo version came with the demo unit with over 480 MB internal memory. but so far, the blogs that i’ve seen displays only around 256 MB.

Well, what can I say, I thought that I was the only one that was not getting the SE on time. I am very shocked to see that I am most certianly not! I ordered my X1 about three weeks ago, still seen nothing of it! Apparently it is going to be shipped tomorrow, but i am not holding my breath because it will not be the first time that it had been ’shipped’ tomorrow, I must say, that I feel very let down by SE and I will seriously think about buying one next time.

All I can say is that the X1 better be worth the wait, or SE will defonatly be hearing from me in the not so near future. But once again, i am having my fingers crossed about tomorrow… and I egarly antisipate the arrival of the X1 on my doorstep!

got mine yesterday… finally…

one defect, 4 GB memory card didn’t work. dropped by their service center and found out I was 1 hour too late but spoke with the people there and they instantly replace the memory card with the one on the counter. Great service from SE (my first experience in the service center but i’ve been told that it’s a first).

fyi, there are only 600 units available with 4 different distributors in Indonesia and i overheard them saying that they’ve only managed to sell less than 200 units. i’d say, great marketing skills from SE (please note that there’s a tad sarcasm there).

costs ’bout USD 820 per unit, but i’ve been told that in Singapore, costs around USD 1,000.- per unit. was thinking of selling it overseas, but with their track record here, i opted to stick with it.

first experience with the unit, i hate WiMo. they say it’s like windows, but it’s nothing like it. well, at least there’s cut and paste…
thank God for Spb, great work by these guys.

- camera button doesn’t seem to work all the time (ie. pressing it won’t go to camera mode).
- WiFi - I still can’t setup my IP settings manually… wonder if i missed any of the panels while setting up…
- still can’t sync with my windows (tried on Vista Business - can’t start Windows Mobile Device Center and Windows XP - can’t connect with ActiveSync via USB).

waiting for update patch from SE and Microsoft…

*sigh*… wait.. wait.. wait… seems like all we do is wait… (and pay a gazillian bucks for a WiMo phone)
