Xperia Q and A part 2

Tags: ,

The last Q and A we did sparked off loads of new questions so, over the weekend I caught up with Magnus and we’ve gone through the main themes. The answers are as follows:

X1a / X1i differences: The X1a will be sold in the US, Latin America and Australia it differs from the X1i in its network configuration and the video support (it is 24 fps instead of 30). Contrary to some rumors, both versions have a front facing camera.

Keyboard layouts: A few people picked up on the fact that the X1 product site features two different keyboard layouts – this is due to regional differences. England uses Qwerty – EN, France uses Azerty, Germany uses Qwertz etc…

Screen Orientation: there is no button officially assigned to change the screen orientation but it is possible to assign one of the soft keys to do this is you want to.

SAR value: Venus max SAR value (of use case of UMTS+ BT turned on) is 1.47w/kg.

US release date: This will be announced by Sony Ericsson US on Nov 3rd

Most of the other questions can be answered by downloading Sony Ericsson’s white paper on the X1

Thanks,

Sam and Magnus

Thank you for the update! I still have one question unanswered: What’s in the box when i buy the phone?
Can you post an unboxing video of the final retail box?

I saw an unboxing video, i guess that was not the final version of the box. Also the whitepaper and the ‘leaked’ manual did not contain any info about the contents.

About the X1i and X1a - Specifically what are the differences in the network config? Will the phone remain quadband 850/900/1800/1900 and the only difference is 3G euro standard vs American standard that is changed? Is the X1a even going to stay a 3G phone for the US? I know a lot of previous SE phones are 3g euro but their American counterparts offer no 3G.

As for the video, why the change in FPS? I understand video differences betwen US and Euro i.e. NTSC and PAL, but is this really the only difference and is the change in the camera itself or just firmware loaded on the phone?

Never mind the network question. I just answered it myself.

Both are Quad Band EDGE meaning the X1i will work with tmobile/at&t, just not on their 3G networks here in the USA. The X1a is 850/1900/2100mhz and the x1i is 900/1900/1200…

Does this have any affects on the GPS capabilities other than speed at which position can by synced or locked?

Is there any date that you can tell me WHEN they will be in, for the likes for us out there, that are really keen on this phone and are turning down everything else for it!? Also which providers will have it cos they are all being very cagey!!!

i will add a comment just to fan the flames of frustration.

i have been waiting for this phone as well and it seems that it’s still going to be a while before it’s released.

i currently have at&t. the t-mobile G1 seems like it’ll be my next phone if you guys can’t get this out in time. i’m tired of waiting and i’m not even excited for this anymore.

i’ve never spent so much time looking for news topics on a cell phone. sony ericsson won me over with the W810i. i hope you guys can release this without it costing more than $500. any more than that and you’re gonna lose me as a consumer.

I see a lot of false info in different post here, so let’s set things straight…..!

On the UK, USA and China SonyEricsson website updated changes have been made, example on the SonyEricsson USA website they have the new panels section and the new phone simulator now in the {try the phone section}………! Go to http://www.sonyericsson.com and pick your country………! You also might want to check out http://www.sonyericsson.com/x1/ …..!

The UK:
http://sonyericsson.com/cws/products/mobilephones/specifications/x1?cc=u ….!
Xperia X1i 850/1900/2100 MHz UMTS

The USA:
http://sonyericsson.com/cws/products/mobilephones/specifications/x1?cc=us&lc=en …!
Xperia X1a 850/900/1700/1900/2100 MHz UMTS

China:

Xperia X1c 1900; 2100; 850; 900 MHz UMTS

This way by going direct to the websites, you don’t have worry about false info…..!

I have several issues with the information going around on Sony’s official websites concerning the three versions of the XPERIA: X1i, X1a, X1c. I know that X1i is UK version, (a) is American Version and (c) is China version, but what are the differences. On the official websites:
http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/products/mobilephones/specifications/x1?cc=us&lc=en (US Website saying the dimensions are 110 x 53 x 17 mm)http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/products/mobilephones/specifications/x1?cc=u (UK Website saying dimensions are 110.5 x 52.6 x 17mm)

So are the dimensions different? What else is different about the 3 versions (network wise?, processor wise?, memory (ram, rom) wise?
Also the video recording: which has 30fps at VGA which doesn’t?

Lastly, being new to the WM OS I was wondering if you could change the wallpaper of the desktop or clock views as well as if there are custom themes that are downloadable or preset.

A thorough runthrough the differences would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know, there is no X1c version for china..and I have looked on a couple different computers and the website for the X1 on both English and UK pages still has all the same information, none of which was posted above..

As for abhishek questions - I don’t know what the dimension issue is there, but network config as far as everything I have seen anywhere is one os 3g Euro spec and one is 3G US spec. All of them are quad-band GSM/Edge 850/900/1900/2100 - The X1i records video at 30fps VGA, the X1a records 24fps QVGA resolution, which sucks. Everything else as far as hardware is the same..other than the keyboards which has been mentioned as some places don’t use qwerty standard… which is in the original post. Please read. You can change the backgrounds in WM6.1, the panels are customizable, but I don’t know to what extent..

Also for the question above you can remove active panels if you want..but you can run all 9 in the background and keep one default one always active on the screen, which means you then press panels button to go back to the 9 panels selection screen.

@abhishek - I don’t know what the deal with the dimensions is. The X1i (UK version) supports 30fps VGA video. The X1a (USA) doesn’t. Ram, processor etc. are still the same. Network differences are detailed above I wouldn’t really take as final as up until the other day the SE page listed the same information on all region sites for the phone. Basically the difference is one supports Euro-spec 3G (UMTS) and one is USA-3g Spec to, the frequencies basically indicate that it will support both At&T and T-mobile 3g networks.

SonyEricsson, after advertising on their websites for months that the Xperia X1 would work on T-Mobile’s USA 3g 1700/2100 HMz UMTS bands, are now saying that the Xperia X1 will not work on T-Mobile’s USA 3g network. Just think, a lot of people made their decision to re-up their contract with T-Mobile USA based on what SonyEricsson had been advertising for months, that Xperia X1 would work on T-Mobile’s USA 3g network. Don’t be surprise if some type of class action legal case comes into play. I for one will never buy a SonyEricsson product again, because of the false advertising.

I’ve been following the XPERIA X1 debate pretty well I think and I’d like the following question answered once and for all:

For the retail version (and I am intersted in the retail version UK users will be getting), how much RAM will the X1 have on board and of that amount, how much is RAM dedicated to video/graphics?

I ask because there is confusion as to whether it comes with 256MB RAM + 128MB Graphics RAM or 384MB RAM + an amount of graphics RAM. It would be pretty disappointing to say the least to buy the X1 now as soon as O2 or Vodafone get it in stock and realise that because I’m an early-adopter I have got an inferior product than those would purchase nearer Christmas time.

Cheers.

This may help: T-Mobiles plan of action is to back date so to confuse potential customers, and existing customers they need to release the G1 on target. If its to close to the launch date, then this will give consumers time to change-out the G1 for the S.E. X.

Why does Australia have to get everything the US does?
24 FPS QVGA - 30 FPS VGA
That is stupid that we receive such a downgrade of the camera. And in my opinion that is a huge difference!
If it is neccssary for the phone to work and conform then that’s ok, but if it is just because the US have some issues then its just rediculous.

Does the X1 provide the “full internet”? For example if I were to visit CNN or BBC’s website, would I only get text or the full webpage as if I was on a regular desktop computer? I ask because I went and looked at a HTC Diamond the other day and it does not provide the full internet. However, I remember my old HP iPAQ 4700 providing the full internet and found it strange that the majority of these new devices cannot provide what I want. So hence, why I ask if the X1 provides the full internet?

Sigh.

I am so worn out from waiting for this device to reach the US. SE, what’s wrong with you people? You’ve got a phone that TONS of people want and you keep delaying it. Those delays have resulted in the release of the G1 and now the HTC Touch Pro in which many people waiting will now jump ship to those platforms. Talk about a SE blunder. What happened to the missing 128MB of RAM that has been stated many times by Magnus during the launch?

An official statement from Sony Ericsson would be good to clear the air over this matter. I think we should expect no less.

Tom,

Did you get an answer to this “Why does Australia have to get everything the US does? 24 FPS QVGA - 30 FPS VGA”

I too like you find it hard to understand why???????

On another point, I’ve been following the development/release of Xperia since February this year, and really don’t understand why SE appears to have so many difficulties in releasing this product. Even after the release date/s is announced, there seem to be no urgency on their part to be pushing for the product to be released globally prior to Christmas. From what I can see, there seems to be a lot of confusion when the actual physical device will be available in varies markets….

I’m too in Australia, and it’s very difficult if not impossible to obtain/find any information regarding Australian release. I find more information from the SE UK site then Australia’s.

I haven’t had an SE phone in the pass, but really like the look and concept of this phone. However by SE continually delaying its release combined with the apparent lack of communication to both existing and potential new customers, it’s making it very difficult and less likely for others and me to hold on and wait and wait and wait endlessly.

No email or comment has answered that question yet. I think PAL which is our video format over here works at 25 FPS. That may be wrong, but if it’s right, why would the camera work at 24 and not 25? And VGA to QVGA seems unneccessary.

I would very much like to see the price of this phone pushed down as most I’ve heard is easily $500+ US. I read the Google G1 is set to retail at $179US, but that could be wrong too. :)

Please remember I dont claim to be a technical wizard.

I couldn’t wait any longer and ended up getting a Touch Pro. Mainly because the X1 seems like it’s going to end up on ATT (yuck) and it going to be very expensive. The Touch Pro was $239 with Best Buy coupon and i’m now enjoying EVDO Rev A on sprint. I don’t have panels and a super high res screen, but Touch FLO is pretty cool and hte device is small. There still is a chance for SE though. Depending on how good the X1 is in person I may have to return the Touch Pro (as long as it’s within 30 days of my new sprint contract!). Hurry!

I’m just curious about certain features of the xperia and I was hopin somebody could help me out with a few questions….

1.) what is the internal memory space in the xperia?

2.) is there an sd slot in which we can expand memory?

3.) does it support wma and wmv files seeing as it’s operating with windows mobile?

4.) does it have a word processor, since it has windows mobile?

any help would be greatly appreciated…..

OK - seriously. Does anyone have ANY news on this release date for the X1a version of the Xperia? I check every day and have scoured the net to no avail. Don’t tease me like this SE. I’m starting to look at other options because this is becoming frustrating!

Also, I’ve come to the conclusion that the X1i wouldn’t be worth it for me here in Chicago. Yes the voice will be fine. But I’ll only have 1900 HSPA without the 850, so that means I’ll have 3G half as much as the X1a. With a phone like this, you’re going to want the most 3G coverage.

I agree the total lack of info on the 3rd, not even an apology from SE, is totally turning me off the X1 and SE. You would have thought that a high-tech company like them would know how to deal with early adopters like us which makes or breaks any new device commercial future… Total comunication blackout after delays and delays does not inspire loyalty…

@maxxvoltage

1. Comes with 400 mb internal memory
2. Has a MicroSD slot
3. I belive it supports both wma and wmv, and with additional apps you can play alot of different codecs.
4. It includes: Pocket Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, PDF viewer)

It’s now 10 Nov 2008, without a word on why the promised 3 Nov 2008 announcement didn’t happen or, more importantly, WHY YOU HAVEN’T ANNOUNCED A DATE FOR THE US YET! Sloppy, unprofessional business practice… If you say you’re going to do something, do it - or explain why you couldn’t. Simple concept.

I truly think it is a sad state of affairs that an OFFICIAL PRODUCT SITE such as this doesnt have the news first that a product of thiers is shipping.

Now I may be reading the article wrong but Ill leave that up to other to see if SE didnt just screw themselves more.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10094132-1.html

again I think its VERY sad that you (SE, Sam and Gang) cant get your acts together. On this page represents the “faithful” so to speak with id say 80 to 90% of the people already deciding to purchase this phone… to treat them as second class no ones who are window shopping and couldn’t take 5 minutes to write a 5 line blog entry is inexcusable.

SE you failed your customers. I can only hope that somehow you make it up to them.

hope everyone enjoys the “New” from sites other than the “Official” one here as they seem to be more current and up to date.

Hi,

I have the Xperia and love it but have one really thick question: I used to have the W810i which i could answer and end phone calls by using my handsfree earphones attachment. Why can’t i do it with the Xperia? What am I doing wrong?

@Christopher - Cnet had an exclusive on the launch, we gave them 24 hours then linked to it.

@Shannon - drop me an email with the details (including which headset you’re using) and i’ll forward it on to one of the SE guys.
