X1 demonstration video

// October 7th, 2008 // CAMERA, DISPLAY, FEATURED, PANELS, TOUCHSCREEN, XPERIA X1

We at Wolfstar finally got our hands on our very own Xperia X1 on Monday, I used it for a couple of hours then recorded this video, (it’s the first one I’ve done and despite the fact that I was in a room on my own, it was still a surprisingly nervy experience.) If you have any questions, or you want any other features of the phone demonstrating in more detail, leave it in the comments and I’ll do another video in the next couple of days.

Thanks, Sam

    Hi Sam,
Thanks for the video and a good job.
I had one burning question that so far no one has answered.
The media panel from SE does it support the bluetooth stereo headset controls?
I know Media player does by default but the panel would be the best place for this.
If you have one to test I would appriciate it.

It’s not too easy doing a video, is it! But you did really well, congrats! Been a long time coming, glad to see it! Is that the same software we’ll see on a network-specific handset, or are they customised?

I noticed one thing from the video that I’ve been wondering about for awhile. When you press a button how silent/loud are they when pressed? If that makes sense.

@Russ – I use the X1 with a HBH-DS205 headset and I am able to use it without issue in the media panel.

@Chris – The navigation keys below the screen are quite loud, this was something I noticed when I first received mine, but you get used to it (unless someone brings it up again!). The QWERTY keyboard is virtually silent.

    Camera looks awesome… Thanks!!!

When the panel button is pressed while running an application, does the app remain running in the background or is it closed? Obvisouly things like the WM Today Screen and SPB Shell would always remain active, but let’s say you’re using Google Maps, Skype, the picture viewer, etc, and you press the panel button. In the video, you tap the X button with the stylus to close Skype and Google Maps. If you don’t do this, will you eventually have a multitude of apps continuing to run and therefore a slower device and shorter battery life?

Hey, great video thanks. Quick question, will it let you map the volume up/down as something else? I am used to having several buttons on my Kaiser mapped to Voice Command, voice recorder, etc. and the Xperia does not seem to have any buttons except for power, camera, and volume (soft keys don’t count as they reflect what is on the screen above and I wouldn’t want to change that). Thanks!

    Hi,
    Gr8 demo Sam :)

I’ve been a SE/Ericsson user for more than 10 years now so I was wondering if i can have the same experience/function that I had with my (S700i/K800i/W880)…
    * listen to music while writing email/surfing the net or listen to my music while checking/doing something else on another panel. In other words, can u mutitask on more than two panels at the same time or just one panel/desktop at a time.

& what do u think about the cam. Picture Quality? I have a cybershot K800i which still rules till today though it’s over 2 years old :)
& why is the phone only available in Solid black not steel silver in Sweden at release?(according to SE Sverige website)

I’ve no doubt that this will be a great phone and only two days to go :)

    Cheers

Hello. I have several issues with the information going around on Sony’s official websites concerning the three versions of the XPERIA: X1i, X1a, X1c. I know that X1i is UK version, (a) is American Version and (c) is China version, but what are the differences. On the official websites:
    http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/products/mobilephones/specifications/x1?cc=us&lc=en (US Website saying the dimensions are 110 x 53 x 17 mm)http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/products/mobilephones/specifications/x1?cc=u (UK Website saying dimensions are 110.5 x 52.6 x 17mm)

So are the dimensions different? What else is different about the 3 versions (network wise?, processor wise?, memory (ram, rom) wise?
Also the video recording: which has 30fps at VGA which doesn’t?

Lastly, being new to the WM OS I was wondering if you could change the wallpaper of the desktop or clock views as well as if there are custom themes that are downloadable or preset.

A thorough runthrough the differences would be greatly appreciated.

Great job on the video demo!

    I have some questions:
    - How much RAM is in the Xperia X1 and how much available after start-up?
    - Can the font size be changed in the menus and screens?
    - Which is the default web browser – PIE or Opera?

@bloob RAM is 384 meg, this was upgraded from the white paper to keep the speed up. and IE is the default though it’s easy to replace it in the quick launch areas with opera, not sure about the font size, will check.

@christon, no I just mis-spoke, it has nothing to do with T-mobile

    @aiman check out the q and a part 2

@X1 rules – I’ll be uploading the two photos I demoed in the vide later today, you can make you own mind up re: the camera

@KCmatt – you can have between 1 and 9 panels running if you want to save memory you just remove panels. re: layering of apps I’m really not sure. Will try and find out though. I know skype signs you out if you swap panels if that helps.

    Hi,

thanks for the video review – very good!

You asked if there was anything else anyone would like to see; please could you show it used as a phone.

I have a K850i and am keen to move to one of these but am sceptical about winmo as a phone. Non of the demos ever seem to demo the phone and SMS functionality.

So if you get a chance please show how capable it is for calls and SMS.

    Thanks,

    Chris.

    Sam,

Great post, thanks for all the great info… Was wondering if you could give me some very important info that has a lot (I mean a LOT) of people confused.

What are the UTMS/HSDPA bands on the X1i (UK/Euro) version? Everyone is now saying that based on SE’s website, the X1i has 850/1900/2100 UTMS support

I, like many other’s in the States, would gladly buy the X1i, instead of waiting for the U.S. X1a, (850/1700/1900?) if it has support for 850/1900 UTMS…

    Any insight on this?

    Many thanks,

    Jon

    @ X1Rules

In Windows Mobile you can multitask all you want. You can have the media panel up playing music and use the start button to get into your messages/e-mail. However, I believe panels are suspended when you exit from one to the next. So you cannot have the media panel up play a song and then go to another panel to do something else. If they didn’t suspend your phone would get bogged down fairly quickly.

    @sam oakley

Please double confirm that the RAM is indeed 384MB. I have been hearing about retail units showing 256MB RAM and would like to clear up this matter once and for all.

Can I have programs running in the background, like say Media Player playing MP3, while I do other tasks in the foreground, like say Web browser or google maps

Since PIE is the default browser as you said, it will always be launched when I run a URL in other applications (eg URL in an email, SMS or document). Can I change the default browser to Opera instead?

@ bloob the version I was using touts 256 meg of ram, but I’m reliably informed that the consumer versions are 384 meg, yes you can have programs running in the background, not sure about the default browser thing, its not immediately apparent if you can. Flash lite won’t be in it to begin with but it’s not ruled out for a future upgrade.

I just saw the website of Xperia with the video demonstration. I just hope that this is a beta version of the site because the whole site is a mistake! The same video is beeing played couple times althought it should be a video story…. what are the different backgrounds for? And why choosing between 2 women when nothing is changing?? Beside the videos doesn’t show anything of the phone possibilities, everything i could see is the different panels…. sorry but i would never buy a phone just to play with changing between panels. SE, i was a big fan of you but your products just keep getting worse and worse. I hope it will change soon with the new models.

Thaks for the nice job on the video.
Im wondering just how easy is to pick a contact to call/sms without sliding out the kb.
The reason Im wondering this is because in the SE videos contact was picked using the absolutely miniscule virtual kb without using stylus when screen was in portrait mode.
Does it have TrackID and flashlight application?
