New version of the SDK now available

We’ve had a great reception to the first version of the Xperia SDK, in the first couple of days it was downloaded literally thousands of times and the initial feedback we’ve had has been really positive. In this update, we’ve added support for Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 development environment and the Microsoft Vista OS as well as added key mapping support to the device emulator and the testing and debugging is easier.

On top of that, we are releasing the SDK as Beta and taking a more open and agile approach so we can dramatically increase the rate of innovation and deliver more of the features requested by the developer community sooner.

There’s still plenty of time for you to submit panels for the 2008 content awards and we’re particularly interested in hearing from people who can use the panels interface to improve the usability of a developed application.

You can download the new SDK here, and I’d very much recommend that you upgrade if you are already running the previous one.

Please keep the ideas coming and thank you for your involvement so far!

Hi everyone me again!!!! I can’t stay away from this site! Still feel very negative about SE’s lack of honesty, but I really would love to get my hands on one of these phones, even after moaning about the lack of information for the last few weeks.
But this new panel really does look good and I can’t wait to have a look at the real thing and even have a play with one. I understand the touch screen is an absolute marvel, so I am holding off pn going to “another manufacturer” for now . But, if anyone out there knows when they will hit the uk phone providers, I would be very interested, have tried to find out today, but still in the dark!! So I suppose I will have to be even more patient for yet another week still there’s not much left of this month and they did say that it would be before the end of October is scraping it a bit fine!!!!! ;-)

Can one download a program that makes it possible to do handwriting in Swedish on Xperia?
I mean handwriting that transfer to letters that look like printed letters. Like on the 910i.

I ordered mine this morning via Vodafone UK. It will arrive Tues morn.

They didn’t even know when it was released….i’ve been calling the upgrade dept every week and each time they gave a new date. I called on Thursday and the lady said…subscribe to the updates someone will call you back (which i had done n e way), its not due until the end of the month now.
On an off chance i checked the vodafone website Sat night and to my surprise it was available. I called up Sund morn and ordered it with a decent upgrade deal….only after saying i was going to change network for the phone.

So yes…it is finally available.

You are wondering in the UK where to get it! Consider yourself lucky you are not waiting in America for the release date of the Xperia X1 from Sony. To the sony reps out there, reminder you told us we would know in Novemeber, and that is very soon so please do not push it away on us!

Hi! Some comment..

Release dates: Since HTC manufacture the hardware for the Xperia phone I understand its not easy for SE to give a clear release date. Speculating - Xperia, which I have tested, is competing with HTCs own devices, and since marketing/cooperation with operators all over the world *must* in some situation mean that a delay have to be expected. I have been working for a manufactur myself and know how many pieces of the puzzle that have to fit..and I understand why end-customers complain if a manufactur keep giving release dates, which never come..a notice: At them moment the SE Xperia is the overall definitive best PDA compared to HTCs own phones. I would recommend to wait :)

If the choice is between an HTC and SE Xperia - TouchFLO vs Panels - the winner is Panels!!! The TouchFLO (3D) is static, i.e. gives you as an end-user no possibilities to customize the GUI (Graphical User Interface). The Panels do - and SE have a positive attitude for developers to make GUIs by releasing an SDK. Thumbs up SE!

About handwriting - not sure how the SE P910i worked, but in Windows Mobile from way back (Palm is said to be the one that invented this) has the possibility for the user to use handwriting and automagically convert it to “digital” letters. Windows Mobile phones have a number of SIPs (Software Input Panels - virtual keyboards) opened up on the screen for entering text, chars, numbers, symbols. In some situations there have been devices lacking some of these SIPs - but it has been possible to activate them by doing so-called Registry tweaks. Registry is an internal database used in Windows Mobile for settings, temporary storage of data, etc. for the hardware and software + the OS itself. Many functions can be tweaked to be activated :) So - it is many 3rd party Windows Mobile SIPs available for download, its very easy to install them (as other applications), but not 100% sure if there is any handwriting SIPs available..I have never liked using it - and it was a bug in it - it was not possible to write an norwegian Ø in the handwriting “SIP” that was implemented in the OS..

Regarding resellers and retailers and phones never arriving - Retailers gets a date from distributors when phones should come - this is just an estimate. When this date come and the phone is not on the storage, the web-systems used for storage admin often automatically just postpones the date with for instance 14 days..and then a customers thinks the date have been moved..but it could be that another disappointments waits in 14 days..thats life, but not fun..

Hi,
I have not got my excellent X1 and am very glad I waited if only to impatiently, love the keyboard, love the panels, love it!!!! but is there anyone out there, who can help me with one minor problem - I love the media panel but can’t seem to get my music to play on it properly - what i means is that some tracks are MP3 some are WMA they all have album art which gets transported when you copy it to the phone. What should happen is that when you go in to music via the panel and into albums you can touch the screen in an upward movement and the albums should flick down showing the picture on the front of the album!!! I have 306 albums on my storage card but only one or two carry the album art!! What am I doing wrong I don’t understand! Also some play in the SE media section somen default to WMP which is very frustrating. I no its only one of those silly tings but I love the concept of the flicking albums!!!! Oh I have spoken to SE uk theysaid they are wo0orking on this and would contact me! But sometimes their track record is not to hot here!!!! Thanks
