US release dates

Firstly, apologies for the delay – there were some last minute changes to the arrangements which meant that the original announcement had to be put back.

The Xperia X1 will be available in the 43 Sony Style stores across the US on November 28. The pre-orders will begin on the 13th via the Sony Style website.

CNET has posted an in-depth review of the phone here, it includes an excellent high quality video and I recommend you check it out.

I must admit that I am shocked and disappointed by SE. Sony releases a phone that does the same thing as the touch pro, but has a little bit nicer design and you charge way more money for it. At a time when Sony’s main competitors are putting out there top phones you simply price yourself out of the race. I am a die-hard SE fan and have owned several SE phones but I am just shocked at how naive SE is behaving when you release a phone with no carrier and expect people to shell out $800 dollars for a phone that is CLEARLY not worth that amount.

Will your company provide a carrier i.e. Att, T-Mobile, etc.? Eventhough I like this phone paying $799 is a bit much.

sigh….well, good luck to the few folks who pay $800 for a phone that should’ve been available for $299 through AT&T. I’m truly sorry to see Sony botching xperia so completely. This really is turning out to be more like a CLIE walk away than I expected!

Be seeing you,

So can we actually hear from Sony Ericsson about the release? Also what about other countries like Australia?

Out of my price range sadly, any reason as to why isn’t not being subsidized by a carrier. I have AT&T and was excited till I heard it was only available unlocked.

@Sam Oakley - Are you aware if there will be a U.S. carrier picking up the Xperia X1 at or around the time of launch? Thanks!

Hmm $799? Does it come in packages of 3?
Sony will probably sell a whopping 3 or even 4 handsets by the end of the year here.

Give a good deal to AT&T to subsidise this phone, do not be greedy.

I originally heard it was going to be offered by T-Mobile. Is that no longer true? Also, how compatible will it be with Macs?

Does the $800 worth of the x1 include shipment, tax etc? If I make orders via Sony Style website can I collect my phone through Sony Ericsson shops in my country (PH)?

for God’s sake give it to T-Mobile — the G1 sucks.

There wont be a carrier picking up at launch i.e. At&t wont be subsidizing this phone. Tmobile surely wont given the lack of 1700mhz UMTS band. For people complaining about the $799.99 USD price tag I have 3 things for you..

1. Buy the X1i from clove.co.uk they shipped to the USA you are looking at about 650 dollars USD, for the phone (black or silver) supposedly better video recording and if you are on At&t you can probably use the 1900mhz band for 3G no problem in most areas.

2. Wait for websites that resell phones/service plans to do their own subsidizing. Amazon for instance could sell this phone at a much lower price if people sign up for a 2 year agreement. Generally this is new customers though. Not sure if it can be a 2 year extension from a qualifying current customer. This happens at a lot of independent websites so I wouldn’t be surprised to see it with the X1a.

3. Pay full price from Sony Style or Best Buy (also taking pre-orders for the phone and available on the 28th) or find something new.

Sony will probably do the same thing they did to the PS3. Jack up the price for all you beta users. If they don’t discontinue it, due to lack of carrier support (i.e. T-mobile 3g), they will find a cheaper way to make them. I use T-mo, and Sony should realize the interest by US consumers. I wanted to buy this phone, but at every turn SE drops another reason why I can’t get it. $800 dollars and you couldn’t make it universal 3g? It seems Sony is just living off the brand with this one.

X1 has excellent features but is frightfully expensive. When is it getting launched in India? If it costs $800 then it will be such a difficult thing to own in these times.

All these people from the US complaining about an unlocked phone…you need to get out more. And I mean literally…out of your country…start traveling, and then you’ll understand the value of an unlocked phone. When you can change to a local sim card and NOT pay ATT or T-Mobile insane roaming prices…One trip and your Xperia makes it’s price back with savings.
(Not even mentioning that you can change carrier any time without needing to throw away your phone, or sell it later to anyone on any gsm carrier. (Try selling an activated and sim locked iPhone, and see what kind of money you get for it.)
Who would buy a TV which only plays certain channels, or a car which only can be driven on certain streets? Land of the free….

Acctually, the Tmobile network does carry the 1700 UMTS band because of it’s new G1 phone with EDGE. I’m a Tmobile user and I’ve compared the G1 specs to the Xperia X1. The X1 seems to configure with AT&T and Tmobile users as well. The UMTS network bands depend on what phone you have because of their programming. Plus Tmobile also carries phone that operate on Windows mobile, so this wouldn’t be impossible. The Tmobile G1 uses the same network band as the X1, therefore making it very possible for Tmobile users to have this phone and possibly Tmobile becoming a carrier. But of course that would depend on Sony if they decide to contract. I hope they do.

Anyone know when the release date is for Canada? And will it be available unlocked or will the Canadian mobile phone monopoly be handling this as always.

Apparently, SE feels that the interface is so special - and perhaps its development costs so high - that it will attract status oriented users who are used to being first adopters - and paying the premium associated with that privilege. But in the end, the experia has WM 6x at its core, which will remain its interface limitation. At the experia site, SE shows someone using the phone and moving back and forth from the SE interface to the WM interface. Somehow she is able to use her fat finger to press a very small bit of text on the Start dropdown or elsewhere and always get the desired function to activate. Having owned a WM6x phone, I can say that it is nearly impossible to use without a stylus, which is precisely the reason I would like to get rid of the unit I’m using. Thus, had SE carried out the finger-friendly transformation of ALL of WM6x, then more people might be induced to paying $800. As it is, it is comparable to the Samsung, LG or HTC WM6x smartphones that ARE discounted by the carriers and have various customized interfaces that buffer the user from the unfriendliness of WM6x to a similar degree as SE does…

In my opinion, the X1 is a brilliant phone, and I would know because I own it. It is definitely worth your money, and is WAAAY better than my iphone. The graphics are better, and it’s got a decent phone. It’s amazing, and I would seriously recommend it to everybody here. Sure, it’s a little pricey, but it sure is incredible, and it beats apple’s service plans. Just choose one that suits you!

I do not believe Tmobile 3G works with this phone even though the UMTS specification is exactly the same as G1. I have this phone, and it only connects to the Edge Network. However, I believe this phone works on AT&T 3G network.

The phone is already available in US, so, for Canadians, they can just hop over the border or order from SonyStyle.com to deliver to Canada.

The Xperia X1 is now available in Puerto Rico by carrier Claro. It is offered for $309.99 with the unlimited data and voice plan of $84/month. I went to the store today and tried it out. The phone looks awesome and the panels were very nice.
