4 new panels announced today at MWC
// February 16th, 2009 // PANELS, X1 NEWS
We’ve got 4 new panels – Skype, CNN, On the road, and Mytopia, coming to the X1. They are being unveiled today at MWC and after a period of testing should be available for download on the /fun section of the Sony Ericsson website. So what do they do?
Skype: See at a glance which of your contacts are online, easily call or instant message them in “just a couple of clicks,” and as far as I can tell from the pre-release material, there’ll also be some kind of graphical customisation using evening, daylight, or event based effects.
CNN: Live news sport and weather direct to your phone and access to i-report (CNN’s citizen journalism tool.) You can browse news by category, tell it what you’re interested in and get it to send you local news based on your phone’s location
On the road: a driving panel. gives you big touch buttons and simplifies call handling / media streaming / GPS tools.
Mytopia: Gives you access to the online bingo and poker games on mytopia.com
These will all be made available for download as well as all the shortlisted entries to the content awards.
I’ll update this as soon as I have more information, pics etc…

It is good to see some progress from SE in relation to the panels concept as the unveiling of the panel competition was abysmal to say the least.
One thing though, who reads/watches CNN these days!? Surely a BBC panel would have been more appropriate.
Yeeey! More panels are always welcome, really looking forward to the CNN-panel!
when would they be available for download?
We really need a BBC Panel, seiously who reads the garbage that is published on CNN anyways. Need more entertainment panels, looking forward to the Skype panel as well. When are they going to be available for download?
It’s cool .. but I want some more media/fun panels
its very nice to see more panels in our x1….
..better to get a panel for G talk also………..
I’ve just been testing the ‘On-The-Road’ panel. Very interesting with lots of potential.
HOWEVER; there’s some gripe that the program RUN COMMUNICATIONS to GOOGLE automatically without my input. It then pulls street name data based on the Track History Log file. problem is, where’s the files stored? I noticed that its able to get google maps to show me the route i took; but i wanna see the log file on my computer!
Also; The [MAPS] button only has support for Google Maps and WayFinder. Sorry to say; these are heavy data GPS programs and cannot be used in my country where data prices are a premium. not only that, data networks are still operating on GPRS/EDGE speeds; not the 3G kind’s you’re used to in the western world. At least provide support for GPS programs like TOMTOM or GARMIN which can work without data network connectivity.
The [Track History] is not bad in a sense that it keeps a log of your start and end points based on your GPS co-ords. and also a link to google maps to get the street name. Reasonably accurate to within quarter/half a block; but it doesnt work properly without a data network connectivity to the internet to get the data and display it to you. Also; the route display comes from the program synch-ing with Google maps to give u a JPG of your route. Unfortunately, i’ve not been able to so far find out where the log file is, and i cant seem to get it to MMS/Email it to myself; the only thing that gets emailed is the trip’s start point and end point street name with the avg speed and total distance. Not the log file gets emailed.
I wonder if there’s anyway i can talk to the programmer to further improve upon the interface on this……… lots of potential, but too much reliance on the network connectivity spoils it for the TRACK HISTORY. Also no support for GARMIN *(cant confirm on TOMTOM ‘cos i’ve not been able to test it out).
