X1 upgrade not in the roadmap
// September 10th, 2009 // XPERIA X1
We picked up on a couple of rumours from yesterday that an official X1 Windows Mobile 6.5 rom had surfaced on XDA developers. Just wanted to be clear that this isn’t true.
There is no official X1 6.5 rom and it’s not in the X1’s product roadmap. There are hackers out there who can do pretty much anything, but unless you’re getting it from the SE update service it isn’t an official Sony Ericsson product.

Actually, I got a Sony Ericsson person on the booth of CES promissing this upgrade on the X1, and I stored couple of other hype set up by SE … Time for Class action law suit!
First time I’ve had a Sony phone, and I must say it will be the last. My phone has been sent back for repair 5 times. Out of the 5 times, 4 for the same fault?? The quality of the phone marketed as a high end phone is laughable, in particular the plastic back casing. The quality/compound of material used is a joke.
The so called “SE Update Service” is another joke, I’m still on R1A. Despite many attempts the update site always indicates that I’m running the updated version. My carrier is Telstra, and from what I can see there should be a R2A update available? There is certainty no R3A update available???
The hardware in the X2 is relatively the same, so why Sony will you not provide an upgrade path to 6.5. for the loyal users.
Are the new panels going to be available for the X1, for my experience to date, I doubt it.
Basically the X1 was the prototype used to develop the X2; we have all been the lab rats (testers).
X1 will be dumped, due to quantity issues, and X2 marketed as the must have business phone, just as the X1 was.
Well I’m pretty much with all the people here – this sucks balls. HTC is offering upgrades. hell LG IS OFFERING UPGRADES !!!! You guys seriously need to reconsider this or face the full wrath of the internet. In case you didn’t know: it is quite powerful when it comes to people being royally screwed by a company.
it is a shame that there is no update.
this seems totaly obscure to me …
and i think simply everyone informed will agree…
never sony again…..
If the money is the problem (LOL) I am willing to pay for that damn license.
And that said the guy, who really hates M$
Well, I being fighting with SE for the last few weeks about this dreaful discussion to dump all their X1 customers in the middle of an ocean without a life raffed!! Guess what they didn’t want to know, am I surprised – NO… Anyway my X1 is over heating and if it’s left on could catch fire!!! I really hope id does!! Anyway, I contacted Vodafone who I have a contract with until next March – they can’t help me because they too have been dumped in the ocean along with their customers – anyway, I feel sorry for providers of this mobile because “They” aren’t getting the support from SE – surprised – No. A member of my family has the iphone, which I would not entertain, although I love the concept – their phone broke and it was replaced with a BRAND NEW one not recon’ed – can’t believe SE they should be totally ashamed and what they are doing is legal thats what gets my goat, that there is no support out there for the piece of junk and there are people who are have just purchased it! Anyway, I am NEVER buying another SE product again. I rang HTC this week they were honest and upfront about their products which is what we want and they have updates for their mobiles – not like SE. HD2 for me hopefully if I can get my hands on it!!!!! SE you are a disgrace and you should be bought to heel over your company practices – I hope that you loose loads of business!!
This is crap. I (as everyone here) has had allot of SE phones. (T61, P800, K510i, 2 X W810i, K810i, C905, X1). I had some other makes also, but was never as happy as with SE. I could not wait to get my X1 and was crazy when I finaly got it in my hands. (My whife went as far as to say I’m married to my phone!) After this news, I don’t even know if I will ever be able to have another smartphone. I think I’ll just get a phone that can text / call (but not SE) and a mini laptop to carry with me. At least I know the mini laptop will be upgradeable (hardware and software). You have disappointed me SE and I will make it a goal to hurt you back ten times as hard as you are hurting your customers by word of mouth! The X1 was the most expensive mistake I have ever made in my life!!!
One more thing: Now that I think of it, the price of the X1 is to high. Everyone told me I’m crazy spending that much on a phone and I said they do not know what they are talking about because it is a SE X1, no price is to high. And now ? Now I have to face everyone and admit to them that they where right and that I was a fool! Well, SE I’m no-one’s fool and will never be. The fight is on!
After I’ve read all this, I’m very disappointed about SE.
I’ve thought a while – should I buy the X1 or should I buy a HTC again. I thought “give SE” a chance, try it. It soundy realy good.
Lessons learned: This is my first an my last SE and I’m not sure to recommend both.
WHAT THE HELL SE??????
Not cost effective you say??? People at XDA has been working day and night to test WinMo 6.5 and confirming that it can run on X1. There are many “almost 100% stable” ROMs produced and they are for free. But you don’t wish to provide the update just because of $50 per phone? If this is for real, then don’t expect much from your X2!!! If X1 was just a test product, then why did you sell it in the first place and provide no further updates after one year? I spent, well, 3000 ringgit (appx. USD900, that’s a lot of money!!!) on the phone, damn it. and what is $50 per update? I am willing to purchase that ROM update from you. Get your arse working! I am very upset about this! I have been loyal to SE and this is how SE is treating me (and many other loyal customers)?
I’m sorry but you are all crazy.
Anybody thinking the X1 is worthless because Sony will not be releasing any more updates for it, should not have this phone.
This is a Windows Mobile device, you’re meant to use it as a PC and install whatever software you find. On your Dell PCs, do you only install Dell and Windows updates? No! You install whatever software you want. The same should be the case with the X1.
I have Windows Mobile 6.5 running on my X1, and have done for the last 6 months. I now also have the latest HTC Sense UI running on top of WM6.5, and have not lost any of the original X1 features (panels etc).
I think you all need to stop feeling sorry for yourselves and stop expecting Sony to do all the hard work for you.
Do you really expect Sony to fork out on millions of WM6.5 licenses after paying for your WM6.1 licenses? I’d say yes if the phone was released only a month or two before WM6.5, but seeing as it’s been out a year, you’re just being unreasonable.
The X1 is an amazing piece of hardware, and many new HTC phones are tehnically equal to it… a year after its release. If you only want to install the manufacturer’s software, then a Windows Mobile device is not for you.
Complaining like you all are shows that you are not technical enough to have an X1 or a Windows Mobile device.
Now my advice to you all. If you want your phone to have newer software on it than the phones released In October 2009, get over to xdadevelopers and spend an evening doing some research.
Three simple steps:
1 – Hard SPL
2 – Find whichever rom you want to install (Touch-IT Leo is probably the best)
3 – Flash ROM
Just look at the X10… using Android 1.6 instead of the latest Android 2.0 OS. This certainly looks like another X1, another abandoned phone without the possibility of an upgrade. Don’t ever get a phone from a manufacture that only cares about money and not customer service
I have a SEX1 and love it. I install all sorts of software on it. I still think SE should have given the improvments made on the X2 to X1 users. I don’t care about WM6.5.
What is so special of Sony Ericsson why can other manufactures
upgrade the software and not Sony Ericsson. It is called keep your customer happy and they will always come back.
I have been a loyal customer since the fist Sony Ericsson phone and been recommending Sony Ericsson to everyone. What a big disappointment spent R9000.00 on the X1 just to be given the middle finger.
This will be definitely the last time i buy Sony Ericsson or recommend Sony to anybody. Big disappointment not a proud Sony Ericsson owner
Sonny, you’re the king. You’re absolutely right. I think people are uninformed about these things or too lazy to do upgrade their phones, so I think it’s better for them to buy Nokia 3310 (but they’ll probably bitch about lack of upgrades there too:P )
X1 is my first SE…
Knowing that SE after sales services are very bad, I won’t buy any SE product anymore…
the price is so high but the services are so bad…
shame on us who bought Xperia X1…
@Sonny
So because you are happy with a buggy Leo ROM extracted from a device with a completely different feature set than ours, we should happy with that too????
NO THANK YOU!
We paid a premium price for our devices, and given that the X1 was touted as a high end device, we expect high end customer service. Not to be completely dumped without any real software fixes. I mean the stupid media panel doesn’t even recognize synced playlists from Windows Media Player. And yes, I could settle for the buggy leaked media panel that does, or I could use another program, but why did I pay Sony so much money to have to do that?
Honestly, I don’t even need WM6.5, but I do expect Sony to give us an updated panel manager along with SlideView, as that costs them nothing to distribute. In fact if you go to the Sony site, and try to download the latest panels (released alongside the X2), it tells you that our panel manager canot support them. that my friend is horrible business. And Sonny don’t come back with some nonsense about using hacked buggy beta versions from XDA.
Never ever a useless X1 again. The SE-service point resent my phone without repair and charged me 40€. I had some problems with the phone jack not working. The reply from the service center was that the phone had been opened once before (not by me).
Well, I had many SE-phones so far but this was my last one. SE does not want to keep their customers apparantly. To bad since the features of the X1 are not that bad. It is just the so called customer service that suchs.
I’m sorry Sonny, but you are the crazy one.
“This is a Windows Mobile device, you’re meant to use it as a PC and install whatever software you find”
On your PC you install whatever software you find? You must have lots and lots of junk/spyware/virus/trojans/younameit.
You say you have WM6.5 on your X1, you wouldn’t have happened to have paid for that license, would you? Oh right, you’re suggesting that anyone with an X1 effectively steal WM6.5. Great! Oh, I don’t have to steal licenses on my PC to upgrade the software–how odd!
Sony Ericsson could simply charge for the WM6.5 upgrade. For example charging $30, which according to Strategy Analytics numbers, is at least twice the cost of the WM license itself (not to mention SE could probably get the licenses cheaper as an upgrade) or even $50. SE could order licenses for say 5,000 phones to start with and see the demand.
Saying it would be “hard work” for SE is completely laughable, since the X1 has the same basic hardware as the X2. This is probably why so many, including myself, are furious with Sony Ericsson. They are essentially giving X1 owners the finger. It’s also funny how SE claims to be a “green” company but insists on practices like these. What better way to make someone get rid of their device than to make it obsolete before it needs to be? Planned obsolence at its finest(or worst depending on how you look at it)
“Complaining like you all are shows that you are not technical enough to have an X1 or a Windows Mobile device.”
Right. If you don’t want to install illegitimate software–you aren’t technical. It’s exactly that kind of thinking which breeds foolishness. It’s not hard to see the reasons why Sony Ericsson is doing so badly financially, and if they keep up this kind of nonsense they can expect to do worse.
I hope there are some way to have an upgrade for my X1 to 6.5 ROM. You know, I can pay another $30 for a new ROM rather than sell my X1 and buy a new X2, just make a comparison, sell this X1 now just have about GBP180 (as the average price on eBay), and the X2 requires customer to pay more than GBP620. Are you trying to push the loss to your customer?
I think you should better to make a 6.5 ROM for X1 and sell it for those who wants it at a acceptable price.
It’s a great device, with a great design and power. You are stupid in doing this. For what? Promove the X2? Sincerely the X2 does not have all this things to change from the X1. Please officially upgrade to WM6.5, WE REALLY NEED THAT!
Hey, I agree with those statements. X1 has been my first Sony Ericsson … and it will be the last one !
ayudeme ,requiero de el manual en español del XPERIA 1
I’ve got my X1 last September, and it is not working just short of 3-month. Sent in Singapore’s SE Service Centre for 3 weeks, and they still cannot confirm when the service can be done.. reason the parts has not arrived. Not only the quality sucks, the staff at Service Centre had much attitude problem when my wife called to inquire status..
I’ve used couple of SE phones before, and this is the worst phone I ever have. I’ll be trading in for iPhone or HTC.. but I still do not know when my phone will be back!
I just brought this Xperia by Sony and if they’ve not keeping me updated to the Mobile 6.5, then buying the Sony was a mistake. I should have gone with the HTC I was thinking of. Don’t companies who do this to us understand that this is the end of their sales not only to me but to anyone I bad mouth them too? My mistake to trust Sony cared about their name or us.
Dear Sony Representative,
This is not really an inquiry but more of a statement as to why your company has gone down and keeps going down. People are tired of having to buy products that become outdated in no less then a year with nothing to hold but a useless expensive piece of hardware that just isn’t useful anymore.
I’m talking about the Xperia x1, yes the formidable phone that was going to revolutionize the market with it’s “panel” interface… I purchased this phone for full price, nearing the 1000 dollar mark, and i was one unhappy individual with the product not even after a month. The platform was slow, the interface was disgusting, not only because Sony didn’t invest it’s time and money working on making it user friendly but because it had windows as it’s backing. I feel i have to send you guys an email to explain how utterly disappointing i am with both your sales department and even your marketing of your products. Why sell a phone for 1000, when not even a year later there is a release of x2, which in turn comes with windows 6.5, really does your support team just drop products after they are built? No update for the x1, what do we x1 customers do? We have to purchase another phone worth 1000 again?? Do you guys realize what your doing to your customer satisfaction, if your not rated the worst, you will soon be making your way there.
Apple makes one phone that kills all your market and you still try to rip people off, it’s like saying please if your not wealthy enough for sony please go somewhere else. If you as a company have not lost a considerable amount of people such as myself who once thought sony was the best cellphone maker out there, well with this you just literally threw that out the window and ran over it considering your panel interface was not only run-over but hopelessly lost in limbo as there are officially maybe 6-10 panels… No investment was put into making that platform interesting, and now not only do you throw your customers under the bus with their 1 year old x1’s you offer no update to 6.5. HTC as you may have noticed updated most, if not all their phone’s to 6.5 and they also spent time and money on modifying the phone to make it appeal to the eye and satisfy the customer… Wake up Sony, before you toss yourself under a bus and get left behind, because as of recently i have not only stopped purchasing Sony products but have recommended others not to as well, you have one thing still going for you and that is all the Japanese who seem to live and die for your products… only product you guys ever made that still remains the top Sony product was the ps2.
Your probably just going to throw this email into the junk email’s and then send me a thank you for my input, but that will be enough as that will only prove how unloyal you are to your customers. I wish you guys would wake up, especially with all these new X series phones, god stick to one platform and make it work, make something that people will love, that people will cherish and flaunt. Make something that will go supported for more then 1 year, something that can last a while. If apple can make it’s first generation iPhone work with its new firmware why can’t you guys make a firmware update for x1 that brings it close to the x2… yes i know why, and that’s why Sony is destined to fail unless changed, because Sony cares only for it’s pockets and nothing more.
Thank you for your time and patience,
Jason R.
P.S. If this means anything to you please send it to your supervisor or someone that this will actually affect thank you.
I completely agree, I bought a state of the art phone. A year later its outdated and I cant get a legit copy of 6.5 to run on it. The user inteface on Windows 6 is uterly unusable. Why dont you at least sell supported Windows 6.5 for the X1. Like I stated in countless emails to SE. I was a happy Sony owner for the last 3 phones (Excluding my whifes two) But the X1 was the last.
My phone cant update
it is very slo
NOT user frendly
I hoped 6.5 will solve it
Now i know exactly why Sony Ericsson suffer a financial loss in a last few years (i guess for a next few years also).
You leave your customer behind. Don’t u realize that?
That is a big shame on you (Sony) guys.
You don’t know how to take care of your own customers. Its just been a year only and you guys are saying that we will not give update.
I will just say that I will purchase iPhone instead of Sony phones.
And a last thing, F**k you!
well i have had sony phones for years and years, and i agree with you guys. they’ve really shafted us x1 owners. they’re doing all these fancy new panels for the x2 and they know full well they work on the x1 but they wont officially release them, nor give us winmo6.5
it’s just penny pinching on sony’s part. i mean they actually gave us new stuff in the r3a beta and then took them out again when they released all. all so they could just put them in the x2 instead.
it’s a con job.
So, if you don’t want that problem again, never open factory in china.
Consumers don’t attention on low price, but they want durability, optimal functional, quality, design, grip comfortable, and satisfying product. So, please made in Japan.
I think it is bad to leave the customers without SW support when they bought a flagship. Even though it was SE first Win Mobile they should not abondon their customers after 1 year. The customers shall not suffer because the collaberation between HTC and SE did not end well.
This is not good, i’ve brought SE X1 for a lot of money and I was expecting upgrades cos i dont think ill be gettin X2, cos wm 7 is on its way and i dont think ull do the upgrade for tht will u? ANyway now i now it was a mistake to buy X1. NOT GOOD SONY
