A day in the life using panels on the X2

// September 23rd, 2009 // X2

You know, I’m the kind of person that demands, well, predictable flexibility.  Panels and the new Panel Manager in the XPERIA X2 deliver exactly that.

At 7:30 in the morning, I’m brushing my teeth and scrolling through the freshest CNN headlines on my home screen.  When I get into my car at 8:30, my X2 automatically brings up the On-the-Road Panel where I can easily track my daily drive to the office – oh yeah and I plug the X2 into my car stereo to play music for the commute. Later in the day, once I really get in the groove (some time before lunch…) my X2 automatically switches to the new TileWave Panel, where I get a good overview of what’s been going on and maybe I’ll read a few of the emails I’ve missed.  Like many of us, I close my day with a “this is how my day was” Facebook update.  Since my X2 switches automatically to Facebook at 6pm, all I need to do is slide out my QWERTY and type a quick status update.

Yeah, that’s a day in my life using the X2’s cool panel interface.  But I’m sure you guys will enjoy Skype, SPB Mobile Shell, YouTube and a ton of other cool panels throughout the day also!

    Dear SE, auto panel switching isnt really a silver bullet to make panels relevant. For most people, a monday is diferent from a friday is different from a sunday.

    Make panels *fast*. Like instant.

    Make panels to do “fun” stuff like find movie theaters and restaurants. Whatever info. ppl need, “theres a panel (app) for that”

    Might consider allowing more than 1 page of panels.

    Did you actually mention the CNN panel? The same one that has been “coming soon” for us X1 users since Feb 09? X2 doesn’t have a prayer unless the people who shamelessly spent money to buy an X1 for $899 get an OS upgrade. All the major forums are full of disappointed users and I’d be very surprised if more than 15% upgrade to X2. The panels support on the X1 was horrible. The device can use nine panels and if it wasn’t for SPB and Oxford we would have about ten to choose from. I think it pales in comparison to the I-phone’s hundreds.

    about the panels “concept”:

    it may seem a little bit useless since the most panels are simply “panelized” application and there is technically no difference between starting a panel via panelmanager or any other app via icon-click. from the marketing and develpers pont of view this thing is a good way to promote something line “native” apps for the xperia series. panels have to be signed and can be sold via SEs online plattform. this is a positive way for developers and even customers because they know there are (mostly :) ) no issues because they where made for the x1/x2. so this makes sense.

    i am personally not a player of the “fanboy” or “haters” game. however i am disinclined to buy another se-smartphone because SE failed over generations of smartphones ( i started with the p990i) to show some respect to highe-end customers. the whole “upgrade” philosophy is very dubious. especially with the x1 the customer becomes very clear about the fact he is used to pay the whole “experia experiment”. it makes simply no sense to hold back the most important updates like OS or flashpanels just to “feature” your new model with it (even it would also run on the x1). you cant simply not expect an customer to upgrade if you fail to deliver on the current “high pitched” model. also from a developers point of view (i am a flash mobile developer) it makes no sense to outline FlashPanels on the X2 and “forget” ;-) an upgrade on the X1. If they want to feature this thing then they should make broader customer base for it via an update for the older models. the whole holdback and “moving” features to a new model practice is enough to offend customers. it did not work for microsoft (the “direct x issue”) and it will not work for SE.

    I downloaded the Youtube Panel X2 from the official site of Xperia. I install it for my X1 but when I select it in panel menu, it said that I need to install a newer version of Panel Manager (please go to sonyericsson.com to install). I don’t know what is the problem. I’m now using Xperia X1, R3AA ROM updated 23 April 2009.
    Who know this issue is?
    Thank you.
