Xperia X2 software support schedule

// February 2nd, 2010 // X2, X2 News

As the X2 begins to roll out globally, it’s only fair that customers know what kind of support we’ll be giving the phone in the months to come. It’s not news to say that we attracted some criticism for this on the X1 and we’re not going to go there again with the X2. So, for the record, this is what X2 customers can expect in terms of software upgrades.

In March, we’ll launch our first upgrade (MR1). It will upgrade Windows Mobile from 6.5.1 to 6.5.2 (which will improve both the stability and usability of the device), it will bring in the use of video telephony, an FM radio and it will introduce fast GPS to get a quicker fix. As well as all this, MR1 will upgrade a lot of the applications in the phone to improve speed, usability and fix any bugs we find.

The second update will go live in May and this will be a big one as it moves Windows mobile onto 6.5.3. This is a significant upgrade in terms of usability, performance, power management and the browser experience.

That’s the extent of our plans at the moment but I’ll update this post as we make any more decisions.

Thanks. Aaron

(ps. Before anyone asks, no it won’t ever go onto Windows Mobile 7, it won’t support the hardware.)

    Very good news!
We are looking forward to see those upgrades but firstly we are looking forward to see the phone here in Greece!
I saw that you wrote “As the X2 begins to roll out globally”, so I hope that moment will not be far from us!

Very good thing that you let us, the customers, know about this in advance, but I have one question that bothers me. Will X2 ever support Mass Storage mode of file transfer?

This is a great step. But why not still do something similar with the X1? I love my X1 and don’t want to get an X2, why not support an upgrade to WinMo 6.5 for the X1?

Well Aaron, I received official reply from Sony Ericsson Contact Center, Ticket: 85981038 and they state that X2 will receive WM7 update ?!? So, who told the truth here ? If it won’t ever go to WM7 – I regrett to say it but I will by some HTC stuff which WILL go to WM7…

May I please test my understanding? If I purchase an X2 running WM 6.5.1, will I be able to upgrade my phone to 6.5.2 and then 6.5.3 rather than only the phones available to purchase after March will be 6.5.2 and after May 6.5.3?
    Kind regards Simon

very impressed with this. the X2 is a great phone but flawed, to hear that theres a plan of upgrades in the near future is reassuring. hopefully in march we will see fixes for the non working LED notifications when recieving a text, the intermittant vibration function and the random crashes.

Wouldn’t believe anything until I actually see it…

I have an X1 with Telstra Australia which is still running R1. R2 is NOT available, and R3 was released a long while ago for other phone carriers but NOT Telstra. I have NO option but to remain on R1.

Software support on X1 is disgraceful. I wouldn’t count on X2 software support being any better.

X1 was just a prototype for X2, and anyone with an X1 was used as testers. This would explain why X1 and X2 have the same hardware.

PLEASE include an equalizer for the media player in any of those updates. That’s really a deal breaker for me. I won’t buy a phone unless the media player has an adjustable equalizer. PLEASE! Thank you!

    @ Victor
GSPlayer has an equalizer built in (works fine on my x2).

But still, the overall sound quality is terrible and needs an equalizer or SE is making a big mistake here…

Every one is complaining about it but SE doesn’t seem to do something about it. I really hope an equalizer is coming soon in one of the updates or via an other way.

In my opinion: if you get rid of the bugs and can make the sound quality better, then the x2 is a fantastic phone.
Otherwise it would be a big waste of money because …

it’s a good phone.. now the wm 6.5.2 whould make the phone runs better right? but i’ve seen a review on the wm 6.5.3 it looks really good. when is the 6.5.3 upgrade will be out because i’m wondering if i should wait for that or should i go ahead and upgrade to 6.5.2… anyway it’s a good phone users just have to be patience with it then it’s not going to act up on you…

    Hi Aaron!

I assume that you have some connections to the SonyEricsson X2 dev-team. please, Please, PLEASE ask them to concider releasing Android to this excelent phone. I can’t stress my dissapointment with Windows Mobile. It’s the most crappy OS EVER on a phone. Slow like hell, and also unstable! I have to restart the phone multiple times per day! And now after 3 weeks, i have start planning to re-install everything..
